News From The Moshers

Mary and Tom Mosher have just sold their home of 14 years at the Monte Vista Village Resort in Mesa, AZ, where they have spent 5+ months each winter season — basically playing in the sun. Their grandkids told their friends that Baba and Grandpa go to “camp” for 5 months!

In Tom’s own words

As I write this (3/6/21), I am in my (Tom) third day of packing and discarding by throwing away or giving away many, many things. It reminds me of each time we traded motor homes, before settling into a Mesa winter home. We discarded and gave away stuff at each trade-in, as well as kept some stuff. It was always amazing what we found in the storage compartments under the motor home that we hadn’t used the whole time we owned that motor home! It seems the same way with this house, only it is three times larger than our largest motor home! So, the discards and the giving-aways were simply three times greater than any motor home! We are so fortunate to have had these years. We didn’t go south this season because of COVID-19 and took that as an omen that this was the time to end this part of our lives’ journeys. Moving around outside today here in Mesa, when the temp is 85°F and seeing my dear friends playing tennis, pickleball or socializing (at a distance and/or with masks) really hit home. I found time to spend 3 hours today with my sister, with whom for the last 13+ years I have shared a weekly lunch during the winter months. Given the circumstance in both our families, it will likely be years before I see her again – in person. So sad …

On the upside, Mary and Tom will be based in Spokane for the foreseeable future, with both of them at times thinking of warmer places during the Spokane winters. They will see more of their long-term Spokane friends and as the COVID-19 lifestyle recedes, they hopefully will meet new folks in UUCS. This winter alone has gifted Tom with renewed interaction (albeit by Zoom!) with many UUSC longtime friends and several new folks. Some folks Tom hasn’t even met in person and can’t wait to exchange big UUCS hugs! This Zoom interaction of last summer, and now this winter, has made Tom’s winter fun and productive – what a great UUCS community.

Of course, having our daughter, Shanna, soon living nearby — and showing some interest in renewing her childhood connection to UUCS — is just a big plus for Mary and me. Mary and I look forward to as normal a summer as possible!
