SUMMARY:Meaningful Movies - The Librarians
DESCRIPTION:Meaningful Movies Spokane is excited to present the documentary The Librarians on March 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the UU Church of Spokane. And excited to be hosted by Be The Change 509\, an activist group formed by Petra Hoy doing amazing work in our community. This documentary brings to the forefront a force in our country that intends to limit freedom of speech\, along with promoting the influence of religion in ways that are unconstitutional in America. If you are concerned about keeping alive the separation of church and state\, you will want to attend this showing and discussion. Take me to The Librarians Engagement Guide.

SUMMARY:Meaningful Movies - Is That Black Enough for You?!?
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Spokane for a Screening of Is this Black Enough for You?!? \nFrom celebrated writer and film historian Elvis Mitchell\, Is That Black Enough for You?!? is a documentary and a deeply personal essay. The film examines the craft and power of cinema from a perspective often overlooked: the African American contribution to films released from the landmark era of the 70s. It is a deep dive into the impact that point of view had on movies\, as well as popular culture\, and serves as a love letter to film\, posing questions that have never been asked\, let alone answered. Crucial artistic voices\, including director Charles Burnett\, Samuel L. Jackson\, Whoopi Goldberg\, Laurence Fishburne\, Zendaya and others\, offer their distinctive prism on the creators and films that dazzled and inspired. The film provides insight into the history of Black representation going back to the earliest days of cinema\, and the cultural impact of witnessing unapologetic Blackness. Produced by Steven Soderbergh\, David Fincher\, Angus Wall and Ciara Lacy\, Is That Black Enough for You?!? marks Mitchell’s directorial debut. \n\nFacebook Page: https://facebook.com/events/s/is-that-black-enough-for-you/1608945116933855/?

SUMMARY:Meaningful Movies: Healing Us
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 68\,000 Americans will die this year due to lack of adequate health care and nearly half a million families will file for bankruptcy due to health care costs. These numbers only represent a fraction of the trauma that millions of people experience everyday in the American for-profit health care industry. The country is divided and wounded and yet 70% of Americans believe health care is a human right. Could the fight for health care be the last hope for unifying and healing America? \nHealing Us is a call for unity\, a cry for help and a voice for hope in America’s ongoing battle for health care justice. Michael Doyle from Whole Washington will be joining us for conversation about a possible ballot initiative for Washington state. We have also invited several local health care workers.

SUMMARY:Understanding and Challenging Anti-Democracy Movements
DESCRIPTION:The Social Justice Team\, PJALS and the Be the Change 509 to host Joan Braun’s talk: Understanding and Challenging Anti-Democracy Movements. \nRacism and other forms of oppression and hate are nothing new in the United States. But social movements advocating hate\, genocide\, and far-right authoritarian politics\, have gained increased power and influence through the current Trump administration. \nThe Trump administration is influenced by multiple social movements that believe the president should be above the law. They believe he should be able to enforce his will immediately\, and that he should dehumanize and call for violence against various “enemies.” \nDr. Braune is a scholar of far-right movements\, including racist hate groups\, fascist movements\, and Christian nationalist movements. In this presentation\, she discusses the influence of these movements on U.S. politics today and how we can resist. \nDr. Braune takes a “social movement approach.” She sees fascism as a social movement seeking power\, always already connected to sources of power. She helps communities think through how to understand the danger and build effective social movements to counter it. She does not claim to have all the answers\, but she helps communities understand how these movements operate so that they can think through effective boundaries with far-right groups and consider means of challenging them. \nThe social movement approach argues that fascism cannot be defeated merely by elections\, policing\, or dialogue. Rather\, fascism can only be defeated through social movements that resist it. The time is urgent to act\, and we can all play a role. \nThere will be time for questions as well as an interactive opportunity to participate in a small group exercise on thinking through social spaces and subcultures we belong to and ways to resist fascism in those spaces. \nDr. Joan Braune (She/Her) is author of numerous works including Understanding and Countering Fascist Movements: From Void to Hope (Routledge 2024) and is co-editor of The Ethics of Researching the Far Right (Manchester University Press 2024) and the forthcoming book\, On Christian Nationalism: Critical and Theological Perspectives\, which will be coming out in December from Routledge. She has been studying fascism and the far-right for the past eight years and frequently presents to activist groups\, faith communities\, educators\, labor unions\, and others.
