Prayer—not something I am usually thinking about in a UU church like ours! I applaud Rev. Todd for bringing it up and can’t wait to hear what he says about it! My first thought was that we do NOT have much musically which references that word. But then I decided to take another look at our hymnal! I started with Spirit of Life which IS sometimes called the UU prayer and had a look around. There were actually a lot of hymns/songs under ‘Prayer and Meditation’ in the back of the hymnal. Some that we use at our church are: Gathered Here, The Lone, Wild Bird, The Star of Truth and There is More Love Somewhere.
This coming Sunday I will be singing two things from our hymnal: “Prayer for This House” and “Come Sunday,” which is actually from Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige collection.
And we will sing together another which I believe is really a prayer at the end of the service, “For All That Is Our Life.” So welcome to the idea of “prayer” as a potential UU concept!
