The special collection for the month of April is the local chapter of the NAACP.
The national NAACP approved Spokane’s charter on April 14, 1919. 2019 marked 100 years in the Lilac City.
The mission of the NAACP is to promote civil rights and social justice primarily for people of color, and to support equality for others marginalized by ethnicity, religion, culture, age and sexual orientation. The NAACP works through the mechanisms of education and advocacy and is an all volunteer organization.
Spokane NAACP works with Spokane Community Against Racism, which is leading a collaborative “No New Jail” effort with Smart Justice, the Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane, Greater Spokane Progress and I Did the Time. The current president of the Spokane chapter is Kiantha Duncan, who spoke at the UUCS service on March 28, 2021.
The NAACP membership is composed of all ethnicities, religions and genders. Several UUCS members are also members of Spokane NAACP.
If this ministry speaks to you, we invite you to give generously. You may mail a check to the church (4340 West Whistalks Way, Spokane WA 99224) or make a donation online. Be sure to note that your donation is for the April special collection.
