The team links the church with the larger Spokane Alliance and its 26 other community organizations to work for the common good in Spokane and Eastern Washington. UUCS has been a member of the Spokane Alliance since 2005 and we participate in actions including those to obtain sick and safe leave for 40,000 low wage workers and to establish a mental health crisis stabilization facility to divert individuals from the jail.
The team is structured to build relationships within UUCS by training our members in the congregational and community organizing techniques used by the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF). This is accomplished through one-on-one meetings that build public relationships among individuals and support strong connections for members interested in community organizing; by holding listening sessions on topics of interest to church members; and by encouraging attendance at two local trainings each year.
