Meaningful Movie for January

Viewing: Thursday, January 14 to January 19, 2022
Discussion: Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom

We urge you to watch our January Meaningful Movie Since I Been Down, a powerful documentary that shows what one man’s vision can create in the oppressive environment of prison. Kimonti Carter, spotlighted in the movie, started the prison led education program, T.E.A.C.H. The film follows his efforts, and those of a wide group of prisoners, as they break free from their fate and create a model of education that is transforming their lives, their communities, our prisons, and our own humanity.

Kimonti is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Yet, he devotes himself every day to educating and expanding the perspectives of his fellow prisoners. Watching this movie will inspire you to help him be successful during a resentencing hearing scheduled for February. Our discussion of the movie will show you how you can help Kimonti, as well as inform you about bills before the Washington State legislature aimed at reforming our incarceration policies.

You must register to watch the movie, as the link cannot be made available publicly but can be sent to every individual who registers to watch the film. The movie will be available to watch any time from January 14, 2022 through 6:30 p.m. on January 19, 2022.
