Owen Mir is often remembered by fellow church members for his persistent recycling efforts, but many do not know that he also spent 27 years in three branches of the service, most of it in intelligence. He was fluent in Russian, Turkish, and had some ability in Pashto from his experiences at 16 living with his family in Afghanistan. He was so pleased to be a part of the Honors Flight in April and surprised at the warm letters he received as folks shared their memories of him and the stories he told.
He had a brilliant and curious mind that found expression in art, engineering, mechanics, history and astronomy by his participation in so many events in Spokane and Idaho. His frugalness is legendary, and stories will be told at the memorial as we remember him. He was a constant student at Spokane Community College (14 years) as he satisfied his curiosity about so many things.
Owen, 77, died on July 28 of cardiac arrest after pulling off the highway in his car in 102 degree heat.
His memorial will be held on September 21, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane 4340 W. Whistalks Way, Spokane with Rev. Dr. Todd Eklof presiding. His urn will be placed at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery, 21702 West Espanola Road, Medical Lake, WA 99022.
