This Sunday the Mixed Choir and I plan to celebrate the changing of our street name to Whistalks Way. Although this is a small victory in view of the atrocities that George Wright wrought on the native Spokane population, it does recognize the Native American woman who stood against his brutalities in defense of her husband and others.
The Choir will sing We Circle Around, a piece based on a traditional Arapaho folk tune. I was sorry not to use a Spokane tribal tune, but I also did not want to trespass or appropriate any sacred song of the tribe.
The song I have chosen has been “out there” in the general stream of songs for some time and the arrangement is a beautiful one. Karin Llyr, an amazing flautist, will accompany the Choir in this arrangement. The Choir will also sing Circle Round for Freedom at the beginning of this service.
And … I fully agree with Rev. Todd in promoting our guest speakers. Don’t miss them! This week’s speaker looks very good—worth all of our time and attention.
