Opportunities for Good Trouble in Spokane

In-person Protests and Rallies

Last week, we heard that the City Council was planning to use our city’s funds to purchase two military-grade sound weapons (long-range acoustic devices, aka “sonic cannons,”) to use as “pre-escalation” crowd-control devices. The only opportunity to provide public comment was initially during the “consent agenda” portion of the city council meeting, rather than having a defined item on the council’s agenda. Thankfully, due to alert citizens, the issue was brought to our city’s attention and postponed until the November 10 city council meeting.

Long-range acoustic devices (LRADs) are among the weapons that were deployed at Standing Rock. Although originally deployed to aid in emergency alerts and evacuations, when used for crowd control, LRADS are designed to emit loud, painful and even dangerous levels of noise, which can lead to serious health issues (potentially including permanent hearing loss) in individuals exposed to them.

Additionally, these weapons are manufactured by Genasys, who also supplies Israel’s unlawful and genocidal campaign against Palestinians. Our city council should not be using our money to support weapons manufacturers that are complicit in genocide.

Stand up by taking the following actions!

Contact your city council member(s). Take me to the Spokane City Council information page.
Attend the protest and city council meeting on Monday, November 10, when this issue will be put on the agenda. The protest begins at 5:00 p.m. outside of city hall, city council meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. If you are able, provide public comment.

Apartheid Free Communities Action for November
The Spokane Police Department has requested the City Council approve $88,000 to purchase 2 military grade LRAD 485XL weapons (sonic cannons) manufactured and sold by Genastys and military/police contractor on the BDS short list.

These are the same weapons used at Standing Rock. They can cause permanent hearing loss, vomiting, disorientation, anxiety and severe headaches. When deployed they affect the entire area including people and animals.

They are selling this as a less lethal method to control crowds than tear gas and rubber bullets.
This was first on the consent agenda on Monday Oct 27 and now postponed till November 10. Please consider contacting your council person and the whole council that this weapon is not safe for our community. And this is not how we want our tax money used.

Hands off Our Healthcare Phone Bank
We can’t undo what they’ve done in the House—but we can fight back in the Senate and at the ballot box. That’s why we’re pushing forward with our phone banking efforts: to hold Republican Congressmembers accountable for their cruel votes and to build pressure they won’t be able to ignore. If the Senate makes changes to the bill and the House has to vote on it again.

Spokane Community Organized Response Network (SCORN)
This is a diverse group of concerned activists that are very quickly are getting a lot done. One of the first things we have been doing is training for first aid certification with a long term goal, for those who might be interested, of having street medic training. This is for events like large rallies or heaven forbid ICE raids. There are around 20 people preparing to be a street medics. The first aid certification is for any citizen. The next one of these will be on September 3, 2025. The these are run by Joe St. John, who has been a first responder and Spokane fire fighter. You must watch an online video and complete tests prior to one-on-one training on September 3. These trainings are ongoing.

The group is putting together street medic first aid kits. Victor Colton, who organized SCORN, is looking to get a grant for $2,500. But we need a grant writer. If you would like to write the grant, contact Lani Prell at laniprell@gmail.com or 509-558-9357.
