August 2025 2.0

Here we are looking at the last part of August with more hot days ahead. Life keeps moving forward with new birth and family travels. Read what’s happening with our church friends.

Introducing

Reggie Ross Dierdorff was born August 3rd at Deaconess. Reggie, who weighed 8 lb 15 oz, is the great-grandson of Sue Wotring and Great nephew of Angie Dierdorff.

Bette shares their Norway trip . . .

Tom and Bette Brattebo, along with their son, his wife and daughter, traveled to Norway late in June and into July.  The goal was to locate the “Brattebo family farm.”  Tom’s great grandfather and great grandmother had left the Brattebo (steep fields) farm in the 1880s, emigrating to Iowa, the land of flat fields. The current Brattebos found the Brattebo family farm, still inhabited by Brattebos, though no one was at home. Next door, at the Flatabos (flat fields) family farm, the details were filled in. We were told that “Norwegians are not very imaginative with names.”

Driving the roads of Norway, from Oslo to Bergen, and then riding trains and ferry boats along the Fjords back to Oslo was so great! And, so steep!!

Tom’s birthday get away . . .

Tom Mosher recently celebrated his 83rd birthday by joining his daughter, Shanna, and son-in-law, James on a road trip to Portland, Oregon, where they visited Tom and Mary’s son, Aaron, and family. (Tom and his wife, Mary, have been UUCS members since January, 1969.) They spent much time, over parts of six days, with Aaron, daughter-in-law, Maarit, and two granddaughters, Milena (age 19) and Astrid (age 13). The third granddaughter, Alina (age 16), was not present, as she was in Finland for a two week youth camp, organized by the Finnish government and focusing on ethics, morals, and citizenship. All three granddaughters have dual citizenship in the US and Finland. All the family enjoyed many hours of visiting, wandering around the wondrous and unique neighborhoods of Northeast Portland. They went on two hikes, one to a waterfall in the Columbia Gorge and another in the enormous Forest Park in western Portland. All the family celebrated Tom’s birthday with a fine smoked-rib dinner, finished off by a special Finnish birthday cake, since Maarit is Finnish. Also, Tom and Shanna visited longtime former UUCS member, Jan Trutton, now 93 years of age, in nearby Vancouver, Washington, reminiscing over their nearly 60 years of friendship. Jan and her former husband, Bud, were like aunt and uncle to Shanna and Aaron.
