Partner Church Sunday 2026

On March 15, we will hold our Partner Church Service. Following the second service, we will enjoy a Hungarian lunch. We will celebrate our 36th year of partner church connection with the Unitarian Church of Felsőrákos, Romania.

There’s an extra reason to celebrate because the Rev. Mónika Kerekes and her husband, Sabolcs, have announced the birth of their daughter, Zorka, on Feb. 14th. It is a historic moment as she is the first girl born in the minister’s house in 200 Years! Seems fitting as Mónika is the first woman minister in that church. The family already includes a son, Zádor, 2 1/2 years.

Our two congregations are facing the challenges of the 21st century together, figuring out how we should live as Unitarians. We may not always think alike, but we have much in common and share warm hospitality during visits from one group to the other. Travel and video chats are when the partnership comes alive and we begin to understand one another.

As both congregations value education for youth, our team recruits sponsors who will each contribute a $300 annual scholarship to a student from Felsőrákos who attends an institution of higher education. Though this amount does not cover the full cost, it assists the student’s family and will be continued until graduation. It is hoped that a pen pal relationship will develop between student and sponsor. The scholarships are provided by generous volunteers from our congregation. There are currently six students and sponsors. We have heard from their lay president, board and minister that this program is very much appreciated by the congregation.

Please do look at the traditional art displayed on our walls, photos from past visits, and plan to stay for Székely gulyás lunch on the 15th. Talk to a person who’s been there; envision yourself walking through the village streets arm-in-arm with a new Unitarian friend.
