The exciting field of Embodied Cognition explores how our brain and body collaborate to come to know the world and ourselves. It particularly emphasizes movement as important to the process. This sermon will focus on consciousness from an embodied perspective. Using her voice training combined with meditation techniques, Madeline will share a methodology for mapping the breath muscles to understand consciousness as an embodied process. She will apply her insights to the arts, particularly the vocal arts, and explain how the vocal practices can help us cultivate emotional awareness as well as an agile and nuanced “sense of self.” Finally, she will share her ideas about how we can look toward the future of the arts from an embodied consciousness point of view.
