In this guest presentation, long-time UUCS congregant, Luba Johnston, will share the story of her life in the USSR. She writes:
“A Russian historian, Tamara Edelman, says: ‘To better understand the modern world one should read George Orwell’s novels.’ Three generations of my family lived in a society comparable to the described in “1984”. We lived in a world with “enemies” around and within, the world where loyalty was encouraged and opponents silenced.”
As she watches Russia revert course, Luba will share her story, including how “Perestroika” brought changes in the economic and political system, and how these changes were ultimately short lived and disappointing.
