American Unitarianism has experienced three major controversies during its history, two of which were ignited by ministers of our Spokane congregation, Rev. John H. Dietrich who helped fire “The Humanist Debate,” which began in the 1920s, and Rev. Dr. Todd F. Eklof, whose writings helped fuel “The Gadfly Controversy” in the 2020s. In this sermon, Rev. Eklof will deliver a version of Dietrich’s sermon from 1924 explaining the historical turning point Unitarianism was at then and the direction he believed it should take.
