Freud famously said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” meaning some things can be taken at face value rather than having some deeper unconscious meaning. The opposite is true of many of the stories and parables attributed Jesus, they are taken to be literally true, robbing them of their deeper meaning and purpose. In this sermon, we’ll consider the deeper implications of some of these other impossible and purposeless accounts.
