In this guest presentation, Paul Lindholdt will reflect on the opening chapter of his recently published book, Interrogating Travel. The opening chapter of that book concerns the loss of an adult son in the Salish Sea over twenty years ago. His body was never found. Paul will discuss some coping strategies discovered in the course of that harrowing experience. He notes that the loss of an offspring seems to go against “the natural order”, but is natural order really a thing? Paradoxically, Paul looks to nature as a source of succor in such trying times. Ultimately, he gained an empathetic understanding for both his son and for the medium of water.
