Today we take the concept of “humanity” for granted (although we don’t always act like it). But, throughout most of human history, people were tribal and saw little connection between their groups and outsiders. The notion of our “common humanity” and, therefore, the inherent worth and dignity of every person, was yet another outcropping of the Enlightenment. Today, there are many who continue to behave as if there’s no such thing and would prefer that we continue to think tribally about ourselves. In this sermon we’ll consider the history and continued importance of recognizing our relationship to every person alive and every person who has ever lived.
