The Social Justice Coordinating Council has selected Transitions as the not-for-profit for special collection for September 2021.
Transitions is a local non-profit serving women and children in Spokane. Their mission is to work to end poverty and homelessness through 6 programs. These include the following:
- Women’s Hearth
- Miryam’s House
- Transitional Living Center & Educare
- New Leaf Kitchen & Café
- Home Yard Cottages
Each program is designed to seek justice, growth, wholeness, respect and community for each woman or child who comes to their doors. Their six unique programs, help women and families at every step of the way as they become more stable and independent by providing safety, support and skills for success.
At Transitions, we believe that the fullness of each person is realized in relationship with others. We are a non-profit working to end poverty and homelessness for women and children in Spokane. Transitions means community for over 1,400 women and children annually. Five unique programs provide safety, emotional support and wrap-around services designed to help women find and maintain affordable housing. The Women’s Hearth is a center where women are warmly greeted, offered safety and access to necessities from staff and volunteers ready to connect them with additional resources to find stability. The Hearth is where women feeling isolated and alone can build meaningful relationships and find a supportive community. COVID-19 impacted all programs significantly in various ways. Transitions adapted and with the help of many, continues to find new ways to meet the needs of our program participants and the community at large. Transitions also has transitional housing programs (Miryam’s House and TLC) for single women and women with children, including on-site childcare with providers helping children recover from the trauma homelessness can cause. You may also have heard about the New Leaf Kitchen & Cafe, their culinary job training program, housed just down the street from our church. And Transitions’ most recent addition of permanent supportive housing, “The Home Yard Cottages” with 24 energy efficient low- income cottage-style homes is just north of here. Thank you for joining with Transitions in their work to help women connect to a supportive community and find safety, support and skills for success. More information can be found at help4women.org.
