Spokane County is experiencing a child care crisis, and the Spokane Alliance is taking action to address it!
Over 200 people will meet at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane on April 28, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m. to call on our elected officials to use $10 million of their $201 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to assist child care centers and their workers.
Since the start of the 2020 pandemic, 15 child care centers in our county have closed, forcing some parents to leave the workforce as costs escalate at the remaining centers. Surviving centers have also experience high worker turnover, causing stress to the children in their care.
Of the $106 million in federal pandemic relief funds still to be allocated in Spokane County, county officials have designated zero dollars for child care. Within the city, only $1 million has been carved out for child care.
We can do better to meet this urgent need.
UUCS is an active member of the Spokane Alliance, and we call on church members to join us on April 28. If you have a child care story you’d like to share, or if you have further questions, please contact Spokane Alliance lead organizer Katie Ashmore Zinler at katie@spokanealliance.org or Spokane Alliance-UUCS delegate Karen Dorn Steele at steele.karend@gmail.com.
