Your UUCS Endowment Team is pleased to announce a generous gift of $10,000 to our church’s endowment, received December 14 from Owen Mir’s estate.
As you may recall from Owen’s September 21 memorial at our church, he was lauded for many attributes: Veteran, recycler, astronomer, cryptographer, learner, mechanic, reader, traveler, cyclist, son, brother, uncle and friend.
In his U.S. Army career, he studied Turkish and Russian and served as an observer of Soviet bases on the Black Sea. He spent over two decades in the Navy and Air Force reserves and participated in the April 2022 Honor Flight for military veterans to Washington D.C.
Like many UUs, Owen was a life-long learner. His interests ranged from automotive repair to astronomy, the arts, the environment, and veterans’ affairs.
Owen joined our church in 1982. He is remembered for his recycling efforts, his broad intellectual curiosity, his kindness, his frugality, and his wide community contacts. His financial gift will help assure our church’s future and enhance our goal to create community, find meaning, and work for justice.
