Recently the new Strategic Planning Team convened and began the process to update the church strategic plan created in 2016/2017. The members on this team consist of three Board members: Nancy Avery, Luba Johnston and Tom Mosher. Sue Stiritz and James Johnson are congregational members.
As part of the Board of Trustees’ work toward updating the strategic plan for UU Spokane, the Board spent time identifying many of the strengths that sustain our church, as well as areas where we are feeling challenged. They also named several opportunities for growth that give us reason for hope and imagination.
Among the weaknesses identified are attracting and engaging new members, needed repairs and improvements to our building, recurring annual budget shortfalls, and the strain placed on a relatively small group of very dedicated — and often overworked — volunteers.
At the same time, they saw real opportunities before us. We have room to grow. Our values and liberal religious identity continue to resonate with many people in our wider community. Our Sunday services and social justice–focused events, including guest speakers, offer meaningful ways to share who we are. They also see potential in building stronger connections with other liberal faith communities in our area that share much in common with UU values.
At the first meeting of the Strategic Planning team they initiated a letter sent to staff and team leaders. They were invited to reflect together on how the staff or team’s work might help turn weaknesses into opportunities, and opportunities into tangible accomplishments. What is already happening that we can build upon? Where might small shifts or new ideas make a meaningful difference? This survey should be completed and returned by April 1, 2026.
The Strategic Planning team will soon reach out by email to all members asking for their input as they are an essential part of updating the Plan.
