Don’t miss the poetry service this coming Sunday! I’ve seen the outline for Paul Lindholdt’s sermon, What Is Poetry Good For?, and I anticipate learning a bit and having some fun! Our pianist, Maura Kegley, will be playing a beautiful piece entitled Poem by Fibich and I have chosen hymns by poets that you will recognize.

In fact, our hymns and songs, both inside the hymnal and from other sources, often use poems as lyrics. There is a strong connection between the two. There is a Metrical Index of Tunes in most hymnals that makes it possible to match the meter of a poem or other text in the hymnal to different tunes in the book. This lets whoever picks the hymn (written words) fit those words to different hymn tunes with the same metric pattern. For instance, the metrical cadence of Amazing Grace is C.M.(8.6.8.6.). Many poems/sets of words fit this cadence.

So come and have a delightful time with us this coming Sunday. Come in person or tune into the stream…
