Spokane Alliance Campaigns for 2025
In December, our church held an important conversation on what pressing issues the Spokane Alliance should confront in 2025, a year of major change and political upheaval. Your concerns were conveyed to a Discernment Assembly on January 14, where over 150 people met to decide the Spokane Alliance’s next community organizing efforts.
Five UUCS members attended this vibrant meeting. UUCS-Spokane Alliance delegates Barb Stuebing and Karen Dorn Steele voted with other Spokane Alliance delegates from labor, progressive churches, education organizations and other non-profit groups to form four new Research Action Teams. Among them:
- Housing and Homelessness Team, which will work on concrete, specific and winnable proposals. First meeting: Jan. 30, 5:30 -7 p.m.
- Youth and Education Team, which will build power to make concrete changes in our local education system. First meeting: Feb. 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
- Inclusive Economic Justice Team, to look at policies to create more inclusive access and stability in our local economy from the perspective of refugees, immigrants, labor, and disability. First meeting: Feb. 3, 6-7:30 p.m.
- Early Learning Team, to dive into childcare and early learning, including (but not limited to) childcare cost and availability for working families, pressures on childcare workers, and language access in early learning. First meeting: Jan. 31, 6:30-8 p.m.
To sign up for these teams, please contact the Spokane Alliance at https://www.spokanealliance.org/sign-up_for_a_research_action_team?utm_campaign=discernment_follow_up&utm_medium=email&utm_source=spokanealliance
Each Research Team will analyze the current landscape on their topic, conduct research on winnable solutions and report at the next Delegate Council on April 24, 2025.

Help us support the Books to Prisoners Program
Books to Prisoners Spokane is a small collective connecting incarcerated individuals with reading materials at their request.
We seek to empower people who are incarcerated with access to the books and knowledge they deserve.
The Spokane chapter of BTP was founded in 2016 and collaborates with other regional chapters to fulfill book requests. We rely on donations from the community to do our work.

BOOKS TO PRISONERS SPOKANE
“The right book, in the right hands, at the right time, can change the world.”
Our special collection for this month will be for Books to Prisoners Spokane. Books for Prisoners Spokane is a small collective of people whose mission is to foster a love of reading behind bars, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-empowerment, and break the cycle of recidivism. This collective believes that books are tools for learning and for opening minds to new ideas and possibilities. Its primary function is to provide free reading materials to incarcerated individuals at their request. They do this by collecting used books, receiving letter requests from those that have heard about the group, filling their requests, and mailing the books.
During a guest presentation last month, members of the collective shared stories of people impacted by Books for Prisoners. One of the speakers pointed out that over 2 million children have a parent in jail or prison on any given day in the United States. An incarcerated parent’s ability to read a book to his or her child helps strengthen the connection between the parent and child and can disrupt intergenerational trauma. Chris Wilson, who received a life sentence at the age of 17, formed a book club while in prison. He wrote the following in a letter to Books for Prisoners: “I didn’t just live for the prison library, I lived because of the prison library. Books saved me from crushing despair and lifted my spirit in times of hardship.”
Books to Prisoners relies on donations from the community to do its work. If this ministry speaks to you we invite you to give generously.

Are you a gardener? You can participate in our new UUCS Seed Project! The UUCS Seed Project is a donation-based seed library aimed at gathering and sharing seeds for gardens within our community. Become a UUCS seed saver and help us grow better gardens and stronger communities. It’s the time of year that many plants are starting to seed.
Please set some seeds aside to share! Save a portion of the seeds from your plants and donate them to the UUCS Seed Library. We will host annual seed exchanges during spring and fall and will house a seed library here at UUCS for drop off and pick up of seeds anytime.
We have two categories: Edible and Decorative. Edible includes vegetables, fruits, grains, and herbs. Decorative includes flowers, ground covers, and other decorative plants. Already have some seeds to donate? Label an envelope with your name, contact information, and seed description, including category. Seal it and drop it in the Sanctuary Drop Box at the church.
