On the one hand, we live in one of the most wondrous times in human history. On the other, it’s one of the most frightening. Both attitudes stem from the same cause—the rapid advance of what are perhaps the most powerful technologies ever. We are like Harry Potter who is at once immersed in a magical world of happiness and possibility, while constantly being terrorized by the frightening wizard Voldemort who threatens to use the same powers to destroy Harry’s life and world. Which characters do you most associate with? Are you Harry Potter or one of his friends? Are you Voldemort or one of his loyal servants? Are you a student or teacher at Hogwarts? Or a muggle who shuns such magic? A half-blood who doesn’t quite fit into either world? In this sermon we’ll explore our relationship with technology through the lens of Harry Potter’s magical story and world.
