Speaker: Maurice Smith

Maurice Smith is a graduate of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and an honors graduate of Denver Seminary (MA-Theology) where he also served as Adjunct Faculty for Field Education. Maurice is the co-founder of Feed Spokane, a food rescue agency where he served as Executive Director for five years. He and his wife, Gale, have worked among the homeless and marginalized of Spokane for the past 19 years, including many years on the Board of Truth Ministries men’s shelter. Maurice has served on the Leadership Team for the Spokane Homeless Coalition, and currently serves on the planning committee for the very successful annual Spokane Homeless Connect.

From September of 2022 until June of 2023, Maurice served as the Day Manager of Camp Hope, the largest homeless camp in the State of Washington, and has written a book about his experiences there: A Place To Exist – The True and Untold Story of Camp Hope and Homelessness In Spokane. Maurice is the Executive Director of Rising River Media, and is the Executive Producer of My Road Leads Home (MyRoadLeadsHome.org), a documentary series on homelessness in Spokane. A native of North Carolina, Maurice lives in Spokane, Washington with Gale, his wife of 46 years, who is an accomplished author, artist, illustrator and graphic designer. They have two adult children. Together they coordinate Rising River Media, a non-profit Christian media and publishing company in the Spokane Valley. Maurice’s topic for Sunday is Not The Way Things Ought To Be and the challenge of seeking the Shalom of the City (based on Jeremiah 29:7).
